The Twin kidney grilled mean machines have been in the market for quite some time now. With its share of luxury vehicles they have been holding their heads up in terms of volumes with its German rivals. Launch of the new A-class by Mercedes has opened an entry level premium hatch back segment here in our part of the world. Audi has also announced their luxury hatch to be launched under the A1 badge by the end of 2013.So the Bavarian’s as expected will be launching its new baby by this September 3rd.The car will be called the 1 series and will be smallest and the least expensive BMW available.

The 1 series was first launched back in 2004, and has proved its share of success in other markets. The 1 series is built on the latest platform codenamed The F20 and the Indian versions are likely to have a diesel and petrol variant. The diesel engine will be a 1997 cc like the one we have in x1, but will be detuned to 143 BHP to give an  edge over the A class. The petrol engine is likely to be a 1.6 litre engine delivering 136 BHP with BMW twin power turbo technology. Both the cars will come with an 8 speed automatic transmission.

The 1 series will be a rear wheel drive car unlike the A-class with a 50-50 weight distribution to reduce body roll. The suspension will be tweaked to suit our road conditions. The car will be assembled in its Chennai plant.

BMW has given us the seven, the six, the five, The Three and now the one series. Though the car sort of look like punched up from the front and kicked in from the back the car is expected to be a game changer for the company in terms of capturing young hearts. The competition will get intensified when Audi also comes with their prestigious hatch but that’s too much to foretell because who knows like in the past the Bavarian’s might fly past the numbers by then.
