This is a simple video animation tutorial explaining about the basic working of a hydraulic brake system. In this video the process of bake bleeding and the basic working of hydraulic brake system has been explained.

Components of a hydraulic brake system:

  1. Brake pedal
  2. Brake master cylinder
  3. Wheel cylinder
  4. Brake shoes
  5. Bleed valve
  6. Hose for brake bleeding
  7. Jar for brake oil bleeding.

How does a hydraulic brake system in an automobile works?

You have to press the brake pedal to applying the brake. This pressurises the fluid in the master cylinder. The pressurised oil enters the wheel cylinder through the metal pipe line. This pressurised brake oil energises the brake piston inside the wheel cylinder. The energised brake piston pressurises the brake shoes and the brake shoes moves gamming the wheels rim resulting in the brake effect to happen.

Brake bleeding procedure in a hydraulic brake system in an automobile:

Initially top up the master cylinder and reservoir with brake fluid. The brake bleeding is done through a bleeding valve. A bleed nipple is connected to the bleed valve. Connect a pipe or hose to this nipple and dip in a jar with brake fluid as shown in this video animation.

Two people are required to make this process happen. One guy should be inside the cabin for applying the brake pedal and the other down the brake bleeding system.

Now the procedure starts:

  1. The brake pedal has to be applied stiff and inform the person down to loosen the bleeding valve.
  2. The person at the bleeding point will loosed the bleed valve and the air trapped in the system comes out and the brake oil is collected inside the jar as shown in the video animation.
  3. As the pressure reduces and air is out, tighten the bleed valve and intimate the person in the cabin to release the brake pedal (if the brake pedal is released before the bleed valve is tight, it will suck the air from the atmosphere in to the system)
  4. This process of pressing and releasing brake pedal and loosening the bleed valve has to be continued till the air was completely removed.

Why brake bleeding is required?

Hydraulic brakes system works according to Pascal’s law. In a hydraulic brake system hydraulic brake fluid is used, which is incompressible. So when the brake pedal is pressed the entire load applied on the brake pedal transfers to the brake pad without lose. But gradually air starts to enter the brake circuit. Air is compressible so the efficiency of the hydraulic brake reduces according to the amount of air present in it. So this air has to be bleed out.
